Everything else in this handbook is technique. This module is the point. You are learning to map reefs not because a 3D model looks impressive, but because a documented, repeatable record of a reef is a genuinely useful thing — it lets someone see how that reef changes over time. That is your real product, and it is why this specialty is called Reef Cartographer and not something about gear.
The One Rule That Overrides Everything: No Contact
Coral is fragile, slow-growing, and often legally protected. A single careless fin kick can undo decades of growth. So the non-negotiable rule of this specialty is: you do not touch the reef. Not with a fin, not with a hand, not by settling onto it, not by placing a scale bar or marker on living coral, not by stirring up sediment onto it, not by moving anything for a better shot.
If you cannot get the image or the survey line without contacting the reef, you do not get that image. Full stop. No picture is worth damage to the thing you came to protect. This rule beats data quality, beats completeness, beats finishing the survey. Your instructor will be watching for it, and not being able to hold a no-contact profile is a reason to not pass the course yet.
Your Buoyancy Is a Conservation Skill
On a reef, buoyancy control is not about comfort or looking good — it is how you avoid hurting the coral. Every minute you hold neutral buoyancy and stable trim above the reef is a minute you are not damaging it. If your buoyancy is shaky, you are not ready to be over a reef with a camera yet, and that is fine — work on it first. (The PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy course is a great companion.)
Change Detection: The Whole Point
One map is a snapshot. The real value comes when someone maps the same reef again — next season, next year — and compares. Did the coral grow? Recede? Bleach? Recover? Did a storm rearrange it? That comparison is only possible if your map can be re-created closely enough to line up against the new one.
That is why this course nags you about consistent scale references, recorded survey parameters, preserved raw data, and an honest accuracy statement. A gorgeous model with no scale and no recorded settings cannot be compared to anything — it is a pretty picture, not a record. A modest map with good metadata is worth far more to reef monitoring than a beautiful one without it.
Sharing Your Data Responsibly
Your maps can feed real citizen-science reef monitoring. If you share them, share them well: accurate metadata, an honest limitations statement, and respect for location sensitivity (some reef and wreck locations are kept secret on purpose, to protect them). Bad or misleading data is worse than no data — someone may act on it. Your limitations statement is what tells others how far to trust your map.
