Reef Hydrocaster
Measure the water. State the doubt. A hydrocast is the oceanographer's term for lowering instruments through the water column on a wire. This one is diver-powered: occupy a station on a mapped reef and characterize the water around it — its heat, its light, its clarity, and how each changes over hours.
Why the water and not the reef
Coral answers to the water touching it.
Not to a basin average — and that water is measured worst by the systems we have. Satellite sea-surface temperature carries a systematic bias at coastlines, and the Argo float network cannot work in water this shallow. Divers are already there, in numbers, wearing pressure and temperature transducers.
One diver's reading is imprecise. A population of readings is not — with a caveat this course teaches rather than hides: aggregation rescues random error, not bias. What converts an opportunistic sample into a controlled one is protocol, and protocol is the whole subject. That is the line between a dive log and data.
What you actually measure
Three transducers, and you own one already
Depth from your own dive computer's pressure transducer. Temperature and illuminance from a logger on a mooring line. Clarity from a horizontal black disc — each Team carries its own and watches the other Team's, and the difference between the two estimates is your measured observer noise. A CTD, the instrument every oceanographer means by "cast," measures conductivity, temperature and depth; conductivity is unaffordable in situ, so what you run is an LTD cast — one letter changed, and the course says so out loud. Nothing is deployed on the reef and nothing is left behind.
The six dives
The order is the argument
Six dives over two station days, three occupations of one station. Dive 4 is the one almost every program skips, and it is the intellectual center of the course.

Two written, dated predictions close the first day, before either result exists — one for change, and one for the stranger claim that nothing will have changed. Dive 4's measured repeatability, not the instruments' detection limit, is the bar Dive 5's claim has to clear.

Dive 2 against Dive 4, per parameter — with the floor that stops a quiet day manufacturing a threshold too small to mean anything.
Transferability
Two questions in order: is the product stable at one station, and only then, does it travel? Verdicts are three-way, never yes/no.

Before the course
Prerequisites & recommendations
Reef Hydrocaster is an independent distinctive specialty — not a PADI-owned course. It follows Reef Demographer, and only the immediate predecessor is named as a prerequisite: a diver holding Demographer already holds everything underneath it. Completing all five courses earns Master Reef Science Diver.
Assessment is on method, not outcome — a report full of null results, honestly stated, is excellent work.
