Reef Chronicler · How-to
The topside procedure, step by step.
Nothing in this course is measured in the water. The numbers are made afterwards, at a table, in two Dry Sessions — and none of it needs software written for the course. Four things get done, and each has a page.
The frame check in Fiji
Open the frame, measure the width of each of the four charts in pixels with the line tool, divide the widest by the narrowest. The ratio goes in the Entry; the smallest ratio is the frame you score.
02 · ScoringPoint intercept in CoralNet
An account, a source, the class list, the upload, fifty random points, the buddy's independent pass, and the export that goes in the archive with the point positions.
03 · Scoring, no accountThe random-point overlay by hand
A printed transparent overlay, or a short Python script that draws the points on the frame, and a tally sheet. Slower, no version to record, cannot drift.
04 · Scoring, offlineFiji multi-point and Cell Counter
The offline fallback where there is no CoralNet: place the points in Fiji, count each class with the Cell Counter plugin, and save the point positions with the frame.
What none of these pages does: set a pass mark for the frame check, choose a class for a point you cannot call, or average your figure with your buddy's. Those are the course's rules, not the software's, and the lessons are where they live.
